Technology Integration in Higher Education

As many of you know, I am a doctoral student. I am starting this online discussion about how we as faculty can implement more technology into the classroom. What are ways you are currently using technology in your personal lives? Would you like to use more technology in your classrooms? How would you like to implement that technology? How do you currently use technology in the classroom?

Thank you for taking your time to consider these questions. I look forward to our online dialogue.

  1. I currently use computers in my course because I teach Introduction to Computers. The students work in a textbook to formulate assignments. Upon completion of the assignments, I have them submit them to me using our course management system CAMS. I have yet to use the discussion board in CAMS; however, I would like to use it in order to give the classroom sense of community. In the past, I have incorporated a blog question to show students have to integrate social media in the classroom. It has been successful. Students enjoy communicating with one another in a less restrictive area. I would like to use a projector in class so that we can work together as a class. At this time, the smartboards are not available but this would be a good teaching tool to use in my technology course because I can show the students completed projects so that everyone can review them together. Another technology that I would love to implement would be document sharing. Doc Sharing will be very helpful in collaborative assignments. One student can begin the assignment while the other student can edit and add to the assignment.

  2. Technology in the classroom is a good thing when used properly. In an age when children are more "tech savvy" than adults, keeping students engaged is essential to the learning process. I have used the discussion board in CAMS for my classes in the past and because it is not synchronous, the students lose interest.

  4. Technology is a part of our world, it communicates with us and for us. Why shouldn’t it be part of the education of our young? We start Children off with Leap Frog and VTech toys, then they graduate to Nintendo, PlayStation, and Xboxes. As teens and adults, we use smart phones like the Blackberry and IPhone to research, take pictures, and communicate. This is not a question. Technology is part of our daily interaction and should be integrated into the classroom as well.

Good thoughts. I agree we should have more technology interaction in the classroom with our students.
